Ways to winter-proof your roof

Posted on 25 October 2023

Winterproofing your roof is essential to protect your home from harsh weather during the winter months. Ensuring your roof is well-prepared for the effects of the elements can prevent damage and help extend the lifespan of your roof. Read on to discover the top ways to winterproof your roof.

10 top tips on ways to winter-proof your roof

Inspect your roof before winter arrives

Before winter arrives, make sure you carry out a thorough inspection of your roof. This can allow you to identify any issues, such as damage or missing shingles, flashing problems, or leaks. You’ll need to address these issues quickly to prevent further damage occurring during winter. At Raven Roofing, we’re on hand to carry out a full inspection of your roof before the bad weather arrives.

Clean gutters and downspouts Roofing in The Winter

One of the best ways to winterproof your roof is to clean out the gutters and downspouts. You’ll need to remove leaves, twigs and other debris that could be causing an obstruction. This will ensure proper drainage and prevent ice dams from forming, which can damage the roof and eventually lead to leaks.

Trim overhanging branches

Trimming overhanging branches from trees located near your home is important in winter. Overhanging branches can become very heavy with snow and ice, which means they’re more likely to break or snap. These falling branches can cause serious damage to your home’s roof, as well as to neighbouring structures and property such as vehicles.

Seal roof leaks

We strongly recommend sealing any roof leaks before the winter weather arrives. Leaks in your roof allow water to enter your home, which in winter, can lead to huge problems. Rain, and melted snow and ice can infiltrate your roof, causing water damage to ceilings, walls, insulation, and even the structural components of your home.

If you know or suspect your roof has a leak, we advise getting it repaired as soon as possible. You may be able to do this yourself using a roofing cement, however, it’s safer to hire an experienced roofing professional to do this for you. Carry on reading to find out ways to winterproof your roof.

Insulate your loft

Adequate loft insulation can help regulate the temperature in your home and prevent warm air from escaping through the roof. This not only helps to keep your living space comfortable and lower heating costs but it can also prevent ice dams from forming. Ice dams can cause leaks to form in your roof, causing water infiltration that can result in damage to the interior of your home.

Replace damaged shingles

If you notice that your roof has damaged or missing shingles, you should aim to replace these before winter arrives. Failure to do so could result in moisture penetrating your roof’s structure, potentially causing damage within your home. Rain, snow, and ice, and rain can find their way through even small openings in the roof, resulting in interior water damage such as ceiling stains, rotting wood, and damaged insulation.

Clear snow build-up

Clearing snow buildup from your roof is essential to prevent potential structural damage and ice dam formation in winter. After heavy snowfall, use a roof rake or a long-handled brush to remove excess snow from your roof. This can help to prevent the build-up of snow ice that can stress the structure. Avoid using a metal shovel to clear snow from your roof since its sharp edges can cause damage.

Schedule regular roofing inspections

Regular roofing inspections can help to prepare and protect this important component of your home during the winter months. Roof inspections can help identify any existing issues, such as damaged shingles, flashing problems, or leaks. Addressing these issues quickly before winter arrives can prevent them from worsening and causing more significant damage.

Roofers in GrimsbyHave an emergency kit and contact information on hand

Winter weather has the potential to be very severe in the UK, with heavy snow storms, blizzards, sleet and even ice storms causing havoc. In case of harsh winter weather, have an emergency kit on hand with materials for temporary repairs, including a tarp, nails, and roofing cement. Importantly, you should also have contact information for a roofing repair company on hand.

Consider installing snow guards or heat cables

Installing snow guards or heat cables on a roof during the winter is a preventive measure to address issues related to snow and ice buildup. These systems help protect your home, your roof, and its surroundings from potential damage and hazards caused by heavy snow and ice. Snow guards or heat cables should be installed along the roof’s eaves to prevent the sudden release of snow and ice, which can be hazardous and damage gutters or the roof itself.

Chris and his apprentice were brilliant! Came out in the miserable rain and made my roof water tight again. I had several quotes from other roofers, cowboys trying to milk my desperation for silly money. Chris was honest, fair and reasonably priced. Highly recommended, thanks!

Excellent service, recently had repairs carried out on my house roof, Chris was really friendly, work carried out to a great standard at a great price 🙂
We have used Raven Roofing several times for small repairs as we didn't want to go to the expense of a new roof, but recent torrential rain forced us to accept we needed a new roof. We were dreading the bill but Raven Roofing were very reasonable (not sure if I'm allowed to say how much). The scaffolding arrived and was put up promptly, Raven Roofing arriving a couple of days later to start work, the only delays were due to bad weather and Raven Roofing contacted us to let us know about any delays which we really liked, usually builders don't bother. Raven roofing were polite, friendly and courteous at all times.Out roof was completely stripped and replaced in a week, all rubbish was removed and the gardens left looking tidy. The roof itself looks fantastic...we are very very pleased and highly recommend Raven Roofing.
