Does Moss Damage Your Roof and Should You Have It Removed?

Posted on 11 September 2026

Green patches of moss are a common sight on roofs across the UK. However, many homeowners are unsure whether moss is simply unsightly or could actually damage their roof.

A small amount of moss is not normally an emergency. Nevertheless, heavy growth can create problems if you leave it untreated for too long. So, when should you worry about moss and when should you call a professional?

Moss does not usually cause serious roof damage overnight. However, thick growth can hold moisture against roof tiles for long periods. Over time, this can contribute to the deterioration of older or already damaged tiles. Furthermore, moss can grow around tile edges and make existing defects harder to spot. Another common problem occurs when pieces of moss fall from the roof. These can collect inside gutters and downpipes. As a result, rainwater may struggle to drain correctly. Overflowing gutters can then contribute to damp walls, damaged brickwork and other problems around your property. Therefore, although a small amount may not cause concern, heavy moss growth should not simply be ignored.

Why Does Moss Grow on Roof Tiles?

Moss thrives in cool, damp and shaded conditions. Unfortunately, the British climate can provide exactly the environment it needs. Some roofs are more susceptible than others. For example, north-facing areas often receive less direct sunlight. Consequently, these sections can remain damp for longer after rainfall. Nearby trees can also increase moss growth. They provide shade while dropping leaves and other organic debris onto the roof. Older tiles can also provide an easier surface for moss to establish itself. Once moss begins growing, it can gradually spread across a larger area of the roof.

Should You Remove Moss From Your Roof?

This depends on the amount of moss and the condition of your roof. A light covering on a sound roof may simply need monitoring. However, thick growth should receive more attention. You should consider professional advice if moss is covering large areas of your roof. Likewise, moss regularly falling into your gutters could indicate a significant build-up. It is also worth arranging an inspection if you can see slipped or damaged tiles beneath the moss. A professional roofer can assess the condition of the tiles while checking for other potential roofing problems. If you are concerned about the condition of your property, our experienced roofers Grimsby team can inspect your roof and recommend appropriate action.

Can You Remove Roof Moss Yourself?

It can be tempting to tackle moss yourself. However, working on a roof carries serious safety risks. Roof tiles can become particularly slippery when they are wet or covered in moss. Additionally, walking across tiles incorrectly could crack or dislodge them. Using unsuitable cleaning methods can also create problems. For example, aggressive pressure washing may damage certain roof coverings. Water can also be forced beneath tiles if the equipment is used incorrectly. Therefore, roof cleaning should always take the roof’s material and condition into account. Professional roofers can also inspect tiles during the process. This means damaged or loose areas can be identified rather than hidden beneath the moss.

Can Moss Cause Blocked Gutters?

Yes. This is one of the most common secondary problems caused by heavy roof moss. Rain, wind and frost can loosen clumps of moss. Eventually, these pieces slide down the roof and enter the guttering. Once inside, moss can combine with leaves and other debris. Consequently, water may no longer flow freely towards the downpipe. Instead, it can overflow down the outside of your property. Keeping gutters clear is therefore an important part of general roof maintenance. Furthermore, regularly checking them can provide an early warning that moss is becoming excessive.

How Can You Stop Moss Growing Back?New Roofs in Grimsby

It is difficult to prevent every trace of moss from appearing. However, good roof maintenance can reduce excessive growth. Keeping gutters clear helps rainwater drain away efficiently. Additionally, removing leaves and other debris prevents organic material from accumulating around the roofline. Overhanging trees may also contribute to the problem by creating permanent shade. Most importantly, have your roof checked periodically. Spotting damaged tiles, drainage problems and heavy moss early can prevent relatively minor issues from developing.

Does Moss Damage Your Roof and Should You Have It Removed?

The answer depends on how much moss is present. Light growth on a healthy roof is unlikely to require urgent action. However, heavy moss can retain moisture, contribute to blocked gutters and hide damaged roof tiles. Therefore, it makes sense to monitor your roof rather than waiting for a leak to appear. Never put yourself at risk by climbing onto a roof to investigate. Instead, contact an experienced local roofing company if you have concerns.

We had Raven Roofing do a small flat roof repair a few years ago. That went fine and the roof is still sound. Then in December a family member needed some much needed repairs doing on a terraced house roof. Repointing, ridge tiles replacing and re fitting and some new roofing felt. Who to call? Well Chris ‘Raven Roofing’ did a good job for us so we recommend him. I’ll say this. Chris always gets back to you, turns up, gives a quote ‘a reasonable quote’ which we accepted right away. A date was set for the job to be done and Chris was there on the dot, job done. The job was once he got stuck into it was to be not as time consuming as initially thought so Chris adjusted his quote downwards which was nice of him. So! We certainly can recommend Raven Roofing for good honest reliable work. If by chance something doesn’t go right with the repair like an unforeseen circumstance Chris will return and put it right. That’s his word on it.

Had a leak from my roof. Chris came out the same day although the weather wasn't good. He surveyed the roof and found the problem immediately (a tile had slipped), took photo's before and after replacing the slipped tile. I asked how much I owed him - he said there was NO charge as it was a quick repair. What a lovely, kind, genuine guy! Would highly recommended him and his company.
