What Are the Common Signs of a Damaged Roof?

Posted on 12 August 2026

Your roof protects your home from rain, wind and changing weather throughout the year. However, roofing materials can gradually deteriorate over time. Storms and general wear can also cause unexpected problems. Knowing What Are the Common Signs of a Damaged Roof? can therefore help you spot problems before they become expensive. If you have concerns about your property, experienced roofers Grimsby can inspect the roof and recommend the most suitable solution.

Missing, Cracked or Slipped Roof TilesWhat Are the Common Signs of a Damaged Roof?

One of the easiest roofing problems to spot is a damaged or missing tile. Strong winds can move tiles out of position. Meanwhile, older tiles may crack because of weather exposure and general deterioration. Even one missing tile can leave the materials underneath exposed to rain. As a result, water may eventually enter the roof structure. Check your roof from ground level after periods of strong wind. However, never climb onto the roof yourself. Instead, contact a professional roofer if something looks unusual.

Damp Patches on Ceilings or Walls

Damp patches inside your home can indicate a roofing problem. Water entering through a damaged roof does not always appear directly underneath the problem. Instead, it can travel along timbers and other materials before becoming visible. Therefore, you may notice brown marks or damp patches some distance from the actual leak. You might also notice peeling paint or changes to plasterwork. Although condensation can cause similar symptoms, unexplained damp should always be investigated.

Damaged Flashing Around Chimneys

Flashing helps create a watertight seal around chimneys, roof joints and other vulnerable areas. Traditionally, lead is commonly used because it is durable and flexible. However, flashing can loosen or deteriorate over time. When this happens, rainwater can enter small gaps around the chimney or roof.

You may not notice the problem immediately. Nevertheless, repeated water penetration can eventually damage internal roofing materials. Repairing damaged flashing early can often prevent a much larger problem.

A Sagging or Uneven Roofline

Most roofs should have a relatively straight and consistent appearance. Therefore, a noticeable dip or sag should never be ignored. Several issues can cause an uneven roofline. These can include damaged timber, long-term moisture problems or structural deterioration. In some cases, the problem may only affect a small section. However, significant sagging could indicate a more serious issue. A professional roof inspection can identify the cause and determine whether repairs are suitable.

Problems With Ridge Tiles and Mortar

Ridge tiles sit along the highest points of many pitched roofs. Traditionally, mortar holds these tiles securely in position. However, mortar can crack and deteriorate as it ages. Loose ridge tiles may become vulnerable during strong winds. Furthermore, damaged mortar can allow moisture into areas that should remain protected. Repointing or re-bedding damaged sections can help restore the roof and prevent further deterioration.

Blocked or Overflowing Gutters

Your gutters form an important part of your roofing system. They direct rainwater away from the roof, walls and foundations. However, leaves, moss and other debris can restrict the flow of water. As a result, gutters may overflow during heavy rainfall. Overflowing water can affect fascias, soffits and external walls. In addition, damaged or poorly positioned guttering may allow water to collect in unwanted areas. Regular gutter maintenance can therefore help protect both your roof and the wider property.

Is Moss a Sign That My Roof Is Damaged?New Roofs in Grimsby

A small amount of moss does not necessarily mean your roof needs replacing. However, heavy moss growth can sometimes create problems. Moss retains moisture and can grow between roofing materials. Over time, this may contribute to movement or deterioration. Rather than attempting to remove large amounts yourself, consider asking a roofing professional for advice. Aggressive cleaning methods can sometimes cause more damage than the moss itself.

When Should You Call a Roofer?

Understanding What Are the Common Signs of a Damaged Roof? is useful because early action can make a significant difference. Contact a roofer if you notice missing tiles, persistent damp, damaged flashing or an uneven roofline. You should also seek advice if your roof has suffered recent storm damage. Importantly, you do not need to wait until water starts entering your home.

A professional inspection can identify developing problems before they become more serious. In many cases, a relatively straightforward repair may prevent more extensive work later.

We had Raven Roofing do a small flat roof repair a few years ago. That went fine and the roof is still sound. Then in December a family member needed some much needed repairs doing on a terraced house roof. Repointing, ridge tiles replacing and re fitting and some new roofing felt. Who to call? Well Chris ‘Raven Roofing’ did a good job for us so we recommend him. I’ll say this. Chris always gets back to you, turns up, gives a quote ‘a reasonable quote’ which we accepted right away. A date was set for the job to be done and Chris was there on the dot, job done. The job was once he got stuck into it was to be not as time consuming as initially thought so Chris adjusted his quote downwards which was nice of him. So! We certainly can recommend Raven Roofing for good honest reliable work. If by chance something doesn’t go right with the repair like an unforeseen circumstance Chris will return and put it right. That’s his word on it.

We were kept informed prior to the work taking place then during etc as you would expect. The work was completed on schedule to a fantastic standard and they even cleaned the area around the house before leaving. Very customer focussed and ensured we had no questions left unanswered. Chris and his apprentice were brilliant! Came out in the miserable rain and made my roof water tight again. I had several quotes from other roofers, cowboys trying to milk my desperation for silly money. Chris was honest, fair and reasonably priced. Highly recommended, thanks!

Had a leak from my roof. Chris came out the same day although the weather wasn't good. He surveyed the roof and found the problem immediately (a tile had slipped), took photo's before and after replacing the slipped tile. I asked how much I owed him - he said there was NO charge as it was a quick repair. What a lovely, kind, genuine guy! Would highly recommended him and his company.
